Epi-Pen: How Fast Can You Access One?

Severe reactions to food allergies can occur in every school affecting both students and adults. Knowing where your Epinephrine is the key to a faster reaction time.

Currently 30 States have laws/regulations in place that allows a student to carry their prescribed Epinephrine (with all of the authorizations in place) should they need to self-administer their Epinephrine. For details on pending similar legislation visit: www.foodallergy.org/Advocacy/advocacy-schools.html
Schools that do not currently allow students to carry and administer their own Epinephrine can change this by appealing to your local school board, superintendent or your state legislator(s). Parents and school staff can do the same and should be encouraged to do so. To receive a free School Food Allergy Program to implement a policy in your school visit the above web site.

The FAAN has partnered with the New York Statewide School Health Services Center (SSHSC) to collect information from school nurses on how often an incidence of anaphylactic reaction occurs. This information will give them what they need to best determine what changes are needed to ensure that schools have the materials and staff they need to manage anaphylaxis. If you are interested in getting a similar partnership/project started in your state e-mail: advocacy@foodallergymail.org.

The state of Massachusetts is currently undergoing a similar program. H.R. 4063 is a current bill in the US Senate that would require the federal government to develop guidelines for managing food allergy and anaphylaxis in schools. Please support this bill by writing to your members of Congress and asking them to co-sponsor H.R. 4063.
